Urology
Various types of lasers are used to successfully treat numerous conditions of the urinary and genital systems. They include: urinary stones, cancers of the kidney lining, ureters and urinary bladder, obstructions due to narrowing of the uretero-pelvic junction, ureteral strictures, benign enlargement of the prostate (BPH), urethral strictures, benign condylomas (warts) of the penis and urethra, and superficial cancers of the penis. Most of these treatments may require general anesthesia and can be performed as outpatient procedures with little or no blood loss and excellent results.
Of all the applications using lasers mentioned above Lithotripsy is by far the most common, and Holmium:YAG lasers are now generally considered to be the Gold Standard. If higher output powers for other applications (such as HoLEP) are not required, then this means that the AURIGA Holmium:YAG Laser will be the ideal solution. If, on the other hand, higher powers are needed for other techniques such as vapourisation, vapour-resection and enucleation (i.e. HoLEP) then the higher power AURIGA XL, VELA or VELA XL Systems would be required. However, to abide by the recommendations made in the recently published NICE Guidelines on LUTS (and also to be able to treat stones with the same system) the 50W AURIGA XL can't be beaten.
